Dear Families, In writing, we have been focusing on elaboration or adding more to our stories. We are starting to use paper with more lines, taping on extra lines to revise, and using question words to add on to our sentences. We are also practicing telling our stories to our writing partner so we can add more details to our books. We tell our story while our partner makes a movie in their head, then they ask questions, after we retell our story with new details, and finally we add the details to our stories.  In Hebrew, we learned the letters nun, nun sofit (final nun)...

Dear Families, In Hebrew, we learned the letters yud, lamed and hey. We added lots of new words to our word wall like, yam (sea), yad (hand), lechem (bread), lev (heart), lashon (tongue) and har (mountain) and our vocabulary just keeps growing. We continued to practice our reading and writing with all the letters and vowels that we have learned so far. In Yahadut, we learned about the amidah prayer. We learned about the meaning of the prayer, when to bow, and how we stand.  We also talked about our forefathers (Avraham, Yitzchak and Yaakov) and our foremothers (Sarah, Rivkah, Rachel and Leah) and we added one...

Dear Families, In Hebrew, we learned the letters kuf and alef as well as the vowel which makes the “Ee” sound. Then we practiced our reading, and we were able to read and write lots of word with the letters that we have learned so far. We added new words to our word wall like; Keshet(rainbow), kobiya (a cube), arnav (rabbit), ananas (pineapple), agas (pear) and aron (closet). In Tefilah, we started learning the Amidah. Dear Families, It was a busy week in first grade! This week in writing workshop we started our small moments unit. We are learning to think about true stories that have happened to us and finding a small moment in the story to tell about.  We are finding the beginning, middle, and end of our story and working with a partner to plan our book. Hello Families, This was our first full week and we were very busy! In Hebrew we learned the letters mem and mem sofit and we were able to learn lots of new words which we added to our word wall like; menorah (lamp), melech (king), mechonit (car), matanah (gift), magafayim (boots) and michnasayim (pants). We also practiced reading and writing with the letters that we have learned so far. In Tefilah, we learned the prayer mah tovu. We discussed what must happen in our classroom/home so it will be a good place. Dear Families, On Monday, we celebrated Simchat Torah with our fifth-grade buddies! We built sukkot out of snacks, danced with the Torah, and got to know our buddies on the roof. Check out pictures from the event below! In General Studies, we are continuing to work on our Hopes and Dreams, and practice classroom routines. Hello Families, We so enjoyed celebrating sukkot with all of you! In Hebrew, we learned the letter tav. First graders were so excited to work start work on their letter books for the first time. In writing we also started to work in our handwriting books, reviewing our numbers and singing our handwriting songs from last year! We also have continued to work on our hopes and dreams for the year, reading and discussing the amazing accomplishments of the people we learned about in “Of Thee I Sing” by Barak Obama. This week, we learned about classroom routines and spent time meeting our new friends.  Students thought about what they want to accomplish in first grade, and then the class created their Hopes and Dreams for the year, In Hebrew/Judaics, we learned about the importance of Yom Kippur, and are beginning to learn about Sukkot.
