Dear Families, In science, students have been studying different types of clouds. We made flip up posters to show what we learned about cumulous, cirrus, stratus, and cumulonimbus clouds. Dear Families, In Math, we are learning about place value! Students played a game where they arranged unifix cubes on a place value chart, and challenged their partner to figure out the number by looking at how many tens and ones there were. Dear Families, This week we celebrated our new groups and worked on building our new communities.  We played games, sang songs, and explored new partnerships. We also went through the voting process to decide on our new group names  –  the red snakes and blue dolphins!  We also explored our feelings about the changing groups and events happening in our personal lives.  We have started keeping feelings journals, and are practicing writing in them daily to notice patterns in how we are feeling and the reasons behind our current moods.  If your child enjoys this, feel free to have them...

Dear Families, In Hebrew, we learned the words aroch (long), katzar (short), Katan (small) and Gadol (Big)and learned how to use those words when speaking and writing. The students also wrote about their hair and the color of their eyes using aroch, katzar, yesh li (I have) and ein li (I don’t have). We had a party in class to celebrate our accomplishments – finishing learning the Hebrew alef-bet and our nitzanim workbooks. Hello Families, In Hebrew, we learned the letters tet and zain and now we know all the letters of the Hebrew aleph-bet! Our first graders are Hebrew experts! This is a very exciting accomplishment, and we are looking forward to celebrating as a class community next week. In Yahadut, we continued working on our siddurim and learned two new prayers from the amida. The first one is called, melech ohev tzedakah umishpat. Dear Families, In math, we have been learning how to split shapes into equal parts! We are practicing using fraction words, such as one half, one quarter, and one fourth to describe the equal parts. Students learned how to fold paper shapes so that they are even. We decorated the shapes and labeled the fractions to show off our work. In science, we showed how the Earth revolves around the sun using flashlights and a globe! Students took turns holding the flashlights and spinning the globe to recreate a year! Dear Families, In Hebrew we learned the letters pey, fey and fey sofit (final fey). We added more words to our word wall like: pilpel (pepper), parpar (butterfly), para (cow), perach(flower) and pil (elephant). We also started learning about Tu Bishvat (the birthday of the trees) and spent time learning Hebrew words related to the holiday. The first graders made beautiful trees and we are looking forward to learning more about Tu Bishvat next week! Dear Families, In math, we are beginning geometry. First graders have been working on identifying and using flat shapes: square, rectangle, trapezoid, triangle, circle, rhombus and pentagon. This week, we played a guessing game, where students had to figure out which shape was being described using clues. For example, I have four corners and four sides. All my sides are the same size. Hello Families, In Hebrew, we learned the letters kaf, chaf and chaf sofit as well as a new vowel, which makes the “Oo” sound. We wrote lots of sentences using the verbs ochel/ochelet (to eat) and ohev/ohevet (to love). We also learned how to say the symbols of  Chanukah in Hebrew and used those words in our writing. We had a very special week together!
