Third Grade 3/12

Social Studies and Reading Transport yourself back, way back, to the 1600s when New York was inhabited by Dutch colonists. Manhattan was named New Amsterdam, the capital of New Netherland. This is what we have been learning about in social studies. Who were the Dutch colonists? What was their way of life? We have been reading and researching the different director-generals who impacted how New Netherland was run, promoted slave trade, and their relationships with the Native Americans who originally inhabited the land. We have studied the colonial fashions, and how clothing can give us other information about how a...

Hello Families, In Hebrew, we learned the words aroch (long) and katzar (short) and learned how to use those words when speaking and writing. The students also wrote about their hair and the color of their eyes using aroch, katzar, yesh li (I have) and ein li (I do not have). We wrote lots of sentences and continued to practice our reading. In Tefila, we learned a new prayer from the Amida called melech ohev tzedakah umishpat. We spoke about the rules that we have in our classroom and in America and how they help us stay safe and be better people. We have learned so many of the prayers from the amidah and...

Dear Families, This week, students delved deeper into teen numbers. Students made observations and shared with their classmates. Some examples of their observations are: All teen numbers begin with a 1; they go in the same order as single digit numbers; 11 and 12 don’t have a “teen” in their name; Teenagers are kids whose ages are teen numbers. These kinds of observations help build confidence around bigger numbers, and help us count and add quickly! We are also practicing beading — you may have noticed students coming home with a bracelet or two! In this activity, we are building...

HUMANITIES 7th grade has started our unit entitle Holocaust and Human Behavior. So far, students have engaged with the topics of identity, stereotypes, the consequences of groups, and antisemitism as we build a foundation for understanding the Holocaust. Students have also started reading the graphic biography of Anne Frank, whose diary we will start reading after the break. The students have done an excellent job grappling with difficult ideas, concepts, and facts. I encourage parents to ask their children about what we are studying in class and discuss these topics together. Sammy HEBREW Dear parents, These past few weeks, we...

Third Grade 2/5

Social Studies The past few weeks we have reviewed what we have learned about the Hudson river, and now are learning more about who it is named for. We have been delving into the Age of Exploration, focusing in on Henry Hudson. Third graders have discussed the benefits and challenges of exploring during that time, the English and Dutch rivalry, and the effects European explorers had on the Native American tribes who were settled along the Hudson river. We have studied maps and all four of Henry Hudson’s routes to find the northwest passage to Asia. Over the weekend, research...

Dear Families, We are Super Readers!!  Kindergartners have been learning about and practicing the many powers they have, to help them become Super Readers. Ask your child if they can name and explain some of these powers. To celebrate the amazing progress they have all made in becoming Super Readers, on Thursday everyone was given a red cape, an eye mask, and a magic wand! What fun it was to read our books dressed as superheroes! Thank you to the many families who have contributed to the food collection for the local Community Fridges. The message on one community fridge reads:...

Community Building As new pod groups we have been playing new games, reading stories, and getting to know each other better.  We even made fresh classroom rules to set the expectations for what we each need in order to be in a safe and joyful learning environment. We shared what the classroom should look like, feel like, and sound like, and how we can each support the class in having a positive learning experience. Students were super excited to get the chance to play with new kids during outdoor time or to get to learn in a new classroom environment....

Community Building As we came back from Thanksgiving, we shared how excited we were to be back in school. We wanted to do hands-on activities, ones that we can enjoy most in the building together. After watching some Bob Ross painting videos, we felt inspired. We used watercolors and discussed Bob Ross’s techniques, his philosophy on how there are never any mistakes in art, and practiced noticing the details in our friends’ painting work. It felt great to be creative, and have new colorful artwork to put on our classroom walls! Social studies, Reading, Writing We have been hard at...

Dear Families, This week was a little different, as we transitioned back from online learning to in person learning. Students and teachers alike were very happy to see each other in person, and eager to discuss the learning and games that happened online. Students are hard at work preparing for our program on Monday. Kindergarteners finished writing their stories, practiced reading them, and were video taped. In science, we have been practicing a dance about planting seeds that you will see on Monday (it also shows off some of our yoga poses!). In Hebrew/Judaics, kids learned about Hanukkah, and how...
