First Grade News

Dear first grade families, Welcome back from Thanksgiving break!  We hope you had a lovely time with the extra days off with your families.  We have been hearing about all the travels, food, and adventures your children have had! In Reading this week, we have been continuing our work in digraphs.  We learned the sounds for th, wh, ch, and sh.  We also have been starting to work on blends like tr for tree.  Students have learned that when the t and the h are together they make a particular sound and when it is in the beginning of the...

Students are getting so excited to choose their characters and act out this crucial American masterpiece! In Social Studies, we have just finished our unit on Colonial America, and students took a cumulative test over the material, ranging from the first European contact up until the time of the Salem Witch Trials. Additionally, the students have been doing really beautiful volunteer work with the elders at the Ezra Project Center. On Tuesday of last week,...

Kindergarten Newsletter

Dear Families, We have launched our new writing unit “Show and Tell” and are busy writing about things we really care about, including our stuffed animals from home.  We are working extra hard on looking closely to add details, writing more on the page, and hearing more sounds as we spell.  We will soon move into writing pattern books! In math, we continued to explore counting strategies as we count bigger groups of objects.  We also are comparing and ordering numbers using less than, greater than, and equal.  Our new favorite card game is “top it!” We have enjoyed working...

Publishing Party

Publishing Party Thank you for attending the second grade publishing party! The joy and excitement from both students and parents was radiating throughout the room. We are all so proud of what the second graders have worked towards and accomplished so far this year. We spent this week in writing finishing up our opinion writing pieces and illustrating our book covers. While the past few weeks focused on writing our introduction and our supporting reasons, this week was all about ending our writing on a persuasive note! We talked about the role of the conclusion, both as a way to...

First Grade News

What an action packed week in first grade! It was wonderful to welcome grandparents and other family members on Kesher Day to our classroom.  First, the students played a game called “pop up, pop down”, standing up or down depending on if you shared a similarity with others.  Then first graders and family guests interviewed each other.  We had fun learning new things about our family and drawing pictures. We really loved celebrating our small moments stories with parents at our publishing party and sharing what we have been learning in Hebrew, Science, and Art through displays of our work. ...

Kesher Day and Preparing for Cobble Hill Trip

Kesher Day General Studies Activity For Kesher Day this year we began by talking about what things make our families special. Second graders and the teachers shared so many ways in which they feel like their family is unique and special. We shared where we were born, what we to do, to the different languages we speak. We learned that our classroom community has a lot of things that are similar but also so many things that are different, and it makes up the diverse community we have full of friendship and love. For the activity, the second graders along...

Guest Teacher, Shinshinim, and Art!

Heights and Hills Workshop To kick off our Social Action Project this year, we had a workshop in our classroom with a teacher from the Heights and Hills organization. Second graders shared things that they think will be good and not good when they get older. Students shared it will be nice to have grandchildren and to make their own rules. Some second graders share that it will be harder to be active, and to do things by themselves. The teachers from Heights and Hills discussed how their organization helps people over the age of 60 who need help living...

First Grade News

The first graders this week have been busy writing, learning and playing.  We have loved seeing parents at school, whether it is during parent teacher conferences or the Hannah Senesh tekes (ceremony). Our class opened the ceremony by singing “Eli Eli” in Hebrew and English, and showed paintings they made which were inspired by the song.  They were rightfully, very proud of themselves! In Writing, the students continued working on their journal entries.  In honor of our Hannah Senesh tekes we created our own journal entries and made them look old by staining them with tea.  We continued our writing...

Learning about Hannah Senesh and Starting Chumash

Tekes Hannah Senesh Second graders gathered for the school wide tekes (assembly) celebrating Hannah Senesh, our school’s name sake, along with the whole school. We learned about Hannah in both the Hebrew and General Studies classrooms. We were so proud of the second graders who participated in the tekes and read lines aloud in front of the whole school. Hannah Senesh Learning in General Studies This week we studied the poem “Eli Eli” written by Hannah Senesh. We studied each line, wondering what Hannah was thinking when she wrote this poem. Students shared that she might have been thinking about...
