2018-19 School Year

Weeks 34 and 35: Monday, May 13th – Friday, May 24th.

Jewish Museum Field Trip Every year, 8th graders at Hannah Senesh collaborate with educators from the Jewish Museum to create an art project. In order to get inspiration for their art project, we traveled to the museum and looked at different pieces in its’ collection. This year, students are working on creating a memorial for something that is important to them or that they want to remember. After looking at a few pieces, students bought lunch at Russ & Daughters and played in Central Park.  Next week, students will finish their memorials with help from an art educator who will...

May 24 — Lag B’Omer and Kesher Day

General Studies with Hilary Dear Third Grade Families, Can you believe it’s already the end of May? Time is flying and, boy, are we having fun! Here are some  updates of our adventures these past two weeks: Writing Over the past two weeks, we focused on the process of writing a draft. We took the notes already written and, similar to our Lenape project, turned those words into our own to create a flowing narrative. Through discussion, we decided that each chapter can look different. One way some students are doing this is by including diagrams, such as of inventions...

First Grade News

We read It’s Okay to be Different by Todd Parr and discussed all the different things that make us special. On Kesher Day, we created puzzles about ourselves; each piece represented something that makes us unique. In Writing, first graders published their poems and decorated them to display at our Siddur Ceremony. We also started writing “Who Am I?” poems. We continued reading Charlotte’s Web and learned about how spiders spin their webs. In Math, we began to learn about money. This week we learned the value of coins, and practiced counting money. When counting  a group of coins, we...

Hello 4th Grade Families!

General Studies with Mike After several weeks of test preparation, students spent the early portion of the week completing this year’s ERB. Students expressed a variety of emotions before and during the exam – nervousness of the unknown, surprise at how simple some of the questions seemed, frustration at the more challenging questions, and relief when it was all over. Lag B’Omer came as a great celebration to the end of testing. While the rain kept us indoors for the bulk of the day, many students proclaimed this to be the most fun they’ve ever had at school! It was...

GENERAL The 6th graders had a blast yesterday competing for the Yellow, Green, Red, and Blue teams during Lag B’Omer! Enjoy some photos of 6th graders showing their team spirit here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/D7ZpzufmiTBbqjit6 JUDAICS:  This week we finished our Toon Tastic projects and shared them with the class! Students took the text from Shemot where Bnai Yisrael crossed the Red Sea and turned it into their very own animated movies! They included the text that we use in tefillah, Mi Chamocha and Az Yashir. It was so fun to see the text come alive as they used this accessible technology. I...

Lag Ba’Omer, Hebrew Letter Party, and Chumash Ceremony

Lag Baomer This year due to the rainy weather we had Lag Baomer indoors. We began our day with Tefila with our team color, lead by the older graders and learning catchy cheers for our team. We made team banners, played lots of collaborative games, ran relay races, and spent the sunny afternoon in the park. We even got to roast marshmallows over an open flame in the park since kids in Israel celebrate with bonfires. Second graders showed great sportsmanship throughout the day by congratulating other teams and encouraging each other.   Hebrew We finished learning the whole Hebrew...

May 12th: blog from Ruby and Asher

Sunday’s bloggers are Ruby and Asher: After a restful Shabbat we woke up early for a morning full of chesed (acts of kindness) and volunteering. We headed straight for Yad leKashish where 270 elderly men and women create beautiful art works and find a home and family. Yad leKashish provides income for all those elderly and makes life meaningful. They work in the crafting studios in the morning and then have lunch together as a community. After buying gifts for our family members and thus supporting the artists we traveled to Pantry Packers. At Pantry Packers we used their machinery...

May 11th: Blog from Hannah K. and Isaac

The bloggers for Shabbat were Hannah K. and Isaac: Today, we woke up at 8:30, being that it was Shabbat, so we were able to get a couple extra hours of sleep. After Friday’s late night, we headed right downstairs to breakfast and enjoyed the first meal of our day. When we were all done with breakfast, our teachers gave us options of what synagogues to pray in. There were several orthodox synagogues, a Chabad, and a conservative synagogue. Some chose the conservative synagogue and joined a beautiful service in the middle of Jerusalem. Others went to a traditional Sephardic orthodox...

Hello Kindergarten Families

Kindergarten has been a whirlwind of events and industrious learning! We have been enjoying reading and discussing many of Kevin Henkes books to improve our reading and writing craft. We also enjoy comparing and contrasting the stories! We explored how he shows character emotions through pictures and words and are starting add feelings to our narrative sentences and illustrations. We also are noticing emotions in books we read independently. We have jumped into the world of surveys through thinking of topic, asking people what they like best of three things, recording, graphing, and analyzing the results. The office staff and...
