First Grade News

Hello Families, In Hebrew this week, we learned the letters tzadik and tzadik sofit and we kept practicing our reading and writing. We read the book “Maddi’s Fridge” and had a conversation about the importance of helping other people in need. In Tefilah, we continued working on our siddurim and learned a new prayer from the amida called mevarech hashanim. We spoke about the importance of taking care of our Earth and what can we do to keep it a clean and safe place. In Parasha we learned about Parashat Bo, which is when Pharaoh tells the Israelites to leave Egypt and they pack up quickly and go. We spoke about how God told...

Kindergarten Blog 1/22/21

Dear Kindergarten Families, Welcome back, and Happy New Year! Kids and teachers were so happy to see each other back in person this week! In math, we are beginning to work with number sentences. Number sentences are similar to addition, but we talk about them in different ways, so that we can better make friends with numbers. This week, kids wrote sentences like: “2 and 3 is 5.” and “2 and 6 make 8.” We learn different strategies to pair numbers together and find out what they make. For example, we might ask, “What do 3 and 3 make?” Kids...

Third Grade 12/11

Community Building As we came back from Thanksgiving, we shared how excited we were to be back in school. We wanted to do hands-on activities, ones that we can enjoy most in the building together. After watching some Bob Ross painting videos, we felt inspired. We used watercolors and discussed Bob Ross’s techniques, his philosophy on how there are never any mistakes in art, and practiced noticing the details in our friends’ painting work. It felt great to be creative, and have new colorful artwork to put on our classroom walls! Social studies, Reading, Writing We have been hard at...

Dear Families, This week was a little different, as we transitioned back from online learning to in person learning. Students and teachers alike were very happy to see each other in person, and eager to discuss the learning and games that happened online. Students are hard at work preparing for our program on Monday. Kindergarteners finished writing their stories, practiced reading them, and were video taped. In science, we have been practicing a dance about planting seeds that you will see on Monday (it also shows off some of our yoga poses!). In Hebrew/Judaics, kids learned about Hanukkah, and how...

First Grade News

Hello Families, In writing this week, students chose a writing piece that they would like to share with the world (publish).  We revised our writing to make sure it made sense and that we included elements to make our stories come alive for our readers.  We then put on our editing hats and checked for finger spaces, punctuation, snap word spelling, and that we used all our sounds to spell tricky words. We put our stories to the test by having a friend read our stories which produced many giggles in all 3 pods.  Lastly, we fancied up our stories...

6th Grade News 12/11/20

Advisory We are grateful that in recent weeks, our advisory time has given us the opportunity to participate in community service. As you may know, our school is holding a PPE drive in order to collect much-needed safety and cleaning supplies for the Brooklyn Landmark School. Last week, 6th graders created multi-media advertisements for the younger students encouraging them to donate supplies. We were excited to take on a leadership role this week, too, as several 6th graders stood downstairs in the lobby during morning drop-off to collect items for the drive and spread the word to parents. During other...

What’s Happening in 5th- 12/11/20

Humanities: We look forward to presenting our latest work to you at our upcoming publishing event on December 17 at 1:00. The fifth graders have been hard at work researching one characteristic of civilization and how that characteristic manifested in Sumer. The students first took notes using a variety of sources and then reviewed their notes and organized them into categories that would translate to body paragraphs in a research essay. Next, they learned how to write an introductory paragraph by hooking the reader with interesting information and creating a thesis statement. Leading up to our publishing event, the students will continue to...
