2020-2021 School Year

Third Grade 1/22

Community Building As new pod groups we have been playing new games, reading stories, and getting to know each other better.  We even made fresh classroom rules to set the expectations for what we each need in order to be in a safe and joyful learning environment. We shared what the classroom should look like, feel like, and sound like, and how we can each support the class in having a positive learning experience. Students were super excited to get the chance to play with new kids during outdoor time or to get to learn in a new classroom environment....

Kindergarten Blog 1/22/21

Dear Kindergarten Families, Welcome back, and Happy New Year! Kids and teachers were so happy to see each other back in person this week! In math, we are beginning to work with number sentences. Number sentences are similar to addition, but we talk about them in different ways, so that we can better make friends with numbers. This week, kids wrote sentences like: “2 and 3 is 5.” and “2 and 6 make 8.” We learn different strategies to pair numbers together and find out what they make. For example, we might ask, “What do 3 and 3 make?” Kids...

Third Grade 12/11

Community Building As we came back from Thanksgiving, we shared how excited we were to be back in school. We wanted to do hands-on activities, ones that we can enjoy most in the building together. After watching some Bob Ross painting videos, we felt inspired. We used watercolors and discussed Bob Ross’s techniques, his philosophy on how there are never any mistakes in art, and practiced noticing the details in our friends’ painting work. It felt great to be creative, and have new colorful artwork to put on our classroom walls! Social studies, Reading, Writing We have been hard at...

6th Grade News 12/11/20

Advisory We are grateful that in recent weeks, our advisory time has given us the opportunity to participate in community service. As you may know, our school is holding a PPE drive in order to collect much-needed safety and cleaning supplies for the Brooklyn Landmark School. Last week, 6th graders created multi-media advertisements for the younger students encouraging them to donate supplies. We were excited to take on a leadership role this week, too, as several 6th graders stood downstairs in the lobby during morning drop-off to collect items for the drive and spread the word to parents. During other...

What’s Happening in 5th- 12/11/20

Humanities: We look forward to presenting our latest work to you at our upcoming publishing event on December 17 at 1:00. The fifth graders have been hard at work researching one characteristic of civilization and how that characteristic manifested in Sumer. The students first took notes using a variety of sources and then reviewed their notes and organized them into categories that would translate to body paragraphs in a research essay. Next, they learned how to write an introductory paragraph by hooking the reader with interesting information and creating a thesis statement. Leading up to our publishing event, the students will continue to...

First Grade News

Hello Families, In Hebrew, we learned the letter dalet. We added new words to our word wall like: delet (door), devora (bee), dov (bear), devek (glue) and dag (fish). The first graders were so proud to write full sentences in Hebrew for the first time using the action words kana (to buy for boy), kanta (to buy for a girl), raah (to see for a boy) and raatah (to see for a girl). We continued to practice our reading with all the letters that we have learned so far. In Yahadut, we continued working on our siddurim and learned a new prayer from the amida called hael hakadosh, which we thank God...

November 20, 2020 — Chilly Weather Reminder

** REMINDER ** As it is getting colder, it is important for students to bring in their jackets, mittens/gloves, and/or hats EVERY. DAY. It is easier to bring it with you and either unzip it or take it off during outside time, than it is to be outside shaking and shivering from the cold. Please support your student by reminding them to wear it when they come to school. As well … the windows are open every day, so cold air does blow in ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Judaics Studies with Phyllis This past Monday was Sigd, the holiday of Beta Israel or Ethiopian...

HUMANITIES Recently, 7th graders have been learning about the first contact between European and Indigenous peoples, and analyzing and debating the consequences of the integration of cultures through the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries. We will start looking at the origins of American slavery next week. In Language Arts, we just finished reading George Orwell’s allegorical novel Animal Farm. Next, students will begin writing analytical essays, which will strive to expose a larger significance to Orwell’s work. Students have been highly engaged in the Presidential Election, have a growing understanding of how our democracy works, and will be better equipped to...

6th Grade News: 11/13/20

Advisory: In 6th grade advisory periods and morning meetings this month, we’ve focused on a variety of important academic and social skills. We identified and practiced healthy behaviors on social media, and then followed up with discussions about the role of non-verbal communication. Students are beginning to see how those all-important non-verbal cues are not present when we text or type online (emojis aside . . .! ), and we hope that they will keep this in mind when they decide how and when to communicate messages online. Other advisory topics have included reading and following all instructions (and doing so independently!), time management strategies,...
