February 5 2021 — Walking in a Winter Wonderland …

Hebrew Heritage with Tomer The beautiful snow and being at home allowed the 4th grade Heritage students reflect and explore winter. They wrote of their different experiences such as building a snow man with their family, wrote poems the winter they can observe from their windows, and of the experience of studying from home.   Judaic Studies with Phyllis The fourth graders are becoming quite the Chumash scholars!  This week we began the story about when Esau traded his birthright for a bowl of soup.  Not only did the students breeze through the new verb vocabulary, but they are now...

Fourth Grade Blog 1/22

Math with Justin Our Fourth Graders are wrapping up their unit on fractions. Students have learned how about mixed numbers and improper fractions and how to convert between the two. They have learned how to add, subtract and multiply fractions with like-denominators. They have also been working on simplifying fractions and solving fraction word problems. Try some fraction fun yourself with these virtual cuisenaire rods. Students have also been solving ‘fraction splats’ like this one:   If there are 7 wholes total, can you figure out what is covered by the splat? All of this fraction expertise will come in...

November 20, 2020 — Chilly Weather Reminder

** REMINDER ** As it is getting colder, it is important for students to bring in their jackets, mittens/gloves, and/or hats EVERY. DAY. It is easier to bring it with you and either unzip it or take it off during outside time, than it is to be outside shaking and shivering from the cold. Please support your student by reminding them to wear it when they come to school. As well … the windows are open every day, so cold air does blow in ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Judaics Studies with Phyllis This past Monday was Sigd, the holiday of Beta Israel or Ethiopian...

November 6, 2020 — History in the Making

Math with Justin Fourth graders have been working hard on their multiplication and division skills. As students work to master multi-digit multiplication, and long division with remainders, they also have started to learn about factors and multiples. Understanding of factors and multiples will not only deepen our students understanding of multiplication of division but it will also help inform our future work on fractions. Looking forward, our learners will be taking what they have learned and start applying it to real world problems including multiple steps and bar models for visualization. If you’re child is looking for a fun way to practice...

September 26 — Our First Full Week!

Judaic Studies with Phyllis Thank you to all of the parents and grandparents who joined us for our Rosh HaShannah presentation last Thursday.  The students were so excited to share their personal reflections about Teshuvah (repentance), Tefila (prayer) and Tzedakah (righteous action).  We began our week by learning about the life of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.  Ask your child what important life lessons we can learn from this inspirational woman.  In tefila this week we learned about the special prayers for the 10 days of repentance between Rosh HaShannah and Yom Kippur, heard a moving rendition of Avinu Malkenu that has gone...

General Studies with Dawn Fourth Graders have been busy and very engaged with the Revolutionary War, decimals, and our service project at the Brooklyn Autism Center. Read on to learn more! Once again writing and social studies are integrated as each student is writing a report about the Revolutionary War. Each report has four sections. The first section is an overview of the war, the second section is about an important person or event in the war or leading up to the war, the third section zooms in on an aspect of that person or event, and the last section...
