First Grade Newsletter

Hello Families, Our 1st graders (now 2nd graders!) had a last week full of celebration and culmination of their hard work! In Social Studies we took all we learned about communities and mapping and build locations to create our 3D Neighborhood.  In Hebrew we shopped for fruit and other treats.  In Math we learned more about money.  In ELA we explored our portfolios from K and 1st and reflected on what we were proud of.  Then we had a popcorn party to view our commercials! Hello Families, In Hebrew, we started preparing for our shuk (the Israeli market). We learned how to say in Hebrew the names  of lots of fruits and vegetables that we are going to buy and sell in our shuk. We spoke about the money that’s been used in Israel called shekel and next week we will make our own first grade money. We also made beautiful wallets. In Social Studies we have revisited maps. Hello Families, In Hebrew, we continued traveling through the state of Israel and visited the city of Eilat. We spoke and wrote sentences about what so special about this city. At the end of our traveling the students made their own map of Israel. In yahadut, we learned a new prayer from the Amidah. That prayer does not have words. We spoke about how the Amidah is a time when we can have a private conversation with God and make our own wishes or prayers. Dear Families, In Hebrew, we continue traveling through the state of Israel! We traveled all the way to the mountains of Jerusalem and visited the Dead Sea (yam hamelach). As part of their stop in Jerusalem, each student made their own kotel (Western Wall) out of construction paper. They wrote notes, about their hopes and wishes, to put in their kotel. We spoke and wrote sentences about what so special about those places. Dear Families, In Hebrew, we started traveling through the state of Israel! We started in the north in the port city of Haifa, made our way to the Kineret and through the busy streets of Tel Aviv. Students wrote sentences in Hebrew of what we can find in each place and drew pictures of each city inspired by images they saw in photographs, videos and books. We look forward to continuing our traveling to new places in Israel next week. Hello Families, In Hebrew, we learned the words aroch (long) and katzar (short) and learned how to use those words when speaking and writing. The students also wrote about their hair and the color of their eyes using aroch, katzar, yesh li (I have) and ein li (I do not have). We wrote lots of sentences and continued to practice our reading. In Tefila, we learned a new prayer from the Amida called melech ohev tzedakah umishpat. Hello Families, In Hebrew, this week we started learning about clothing. We talk about all the clothing that we are wearing during the winter, like: cova (hat), tzaeif (scarf), kefafot (gloves), meeil (coat), michnasayim (pants) and garbyim (socks). We learned the verbs lovesh (to wear, masculine) and loveshet (to wear, feminine) and Students spent time writing sentences about what they are wearing in the winter. In Parasha, we read the story of Parashat Yitro where the Israelites go to Mount Sinai and receive the Ten Commandments and We discussed the significance of each commandment. Hello Families, In Hebrew this week, we learned the letters tzadik and tzadik sofit and we kept practicing our reading and writing. We read the book “Maddi’s Fridge” and had a conversation about the importance of helping other people in need. In Tefilah, we continued working on our siddurim and learned a new prayer from the amida called mevarech hashanim. We spoke about the importance of taking care of our Earth and what can we do to keep it a clean and safe place. Hello Families, In writing this week, students chose a writing piece that they would like to share with the world (publish).  We revised our writing to make sure it made sense and that we included elements to make our stories come alive for our readers.  We then put on our editing hats and checked for finger spaces, punctuation, snap word spelling, and that we used all our sounds to spell tricky words. We put our stories to the test by having a friend read our stories which produced many giggles in all 3 pods.  Lastly, we fancied up our stories...
