Kindergarten General Studies

It was a wonderful week in Kindergarten, highlighted by a full day of activities on Purim.  We heard the Purim story, participated in a parade, went to a carnival, decorated and exchanged bags with our buddies, and heard about a sixth grade service project. Other highlights included beginning to revise our information books, look at patterns in math ,  look a vowel sounds (focusing on short i)  and hearing some stories about kindness.  One book we read was about Community Help in Park Slope, an organization on Fourth Avenue and Sacket that serves lunch to over 200 hungry people from...

Kindergarten Hebrew Judaics

Dear Kindergarten Families הורים יקרים, This week we got ready to celebrate Purim! In Judaics we went deeper into the Purim story and practiced telling it ourselves so that we could write our own megillot on paper towel scrolls. We learned about the special mitzvot of Purim: Hear the Megillah, distribute Mishloach Manot packages of food, donate/volunteer for Matanot L’evyonim to the less fortunate, and have a Purim feast/Seudah. We played a drawing game where we guessed which costumes we might wear during our whole school celebration. It was so exciting to see everyone all dressed up yesterday! We had...

Dear Kindergarten Families,

We are so excited that Liz is returning on Monday! This week’s writing was letters welcoming her back and telling her about what we have been learning since she was gone. In math we continued our study of shapes, looking at the squares, triangles, rectangles, and circles that you can make when you trace the faces of cubes, rectangles, pyramids, and cylinders. Next week we will add hexagons to the shapes we are working with. In social studies we read another book about being an older sibling, as we have several children who are awaiting the birth of a new...

Children also finished their Family Collages and added a  sentence about what they like to do with their families. You will see these hanging in the hallway when...

Dear Kindergarten Families.

הורים יקרים, We had an exciting last week before February break!   Today we celebrated the 100th day of school! Your children have been working hard, learning lots, and having plenty of fun.   In Hebrew we continued exploring ways to describe how we feel. We made books about our emotions and shared them during our morning meeting.   In Judaics we learned how rainbows are made of light and color. We experimented with color mixing and made a “walking rainbow” with food coloring and paper towels. We also read the story of the Tower of Babel, and talked about...

Hello Kindergarten Families

This week was another busy one in Kindergarten. In Writer’s Workshop we began learning about informational books by reading books about penguins, animal feet, and germs. We then thought about topics that kindergartners themselves know a lot about. Topics included Lego, ballet, video games, scooters, iPads, cats, candy, toys, insects, Fortnight, and F 5 cars.  The latter two are things the teachers will learn a lot about from the books students write over the next few weeks! In math we continued our number work playing games of One More and Two More.  We did a problem solving activity called Which...

Kindergarten Hebrew / Judaics

Dear Kindergarten Families הורים יקרים, This week in Hebrew we continued learning about clothing. We collaged on paper with fabric and other scraps then cut the paper into clothing. We’re getting better at recognizing descriptions of our clothes and describing others, an important social step in recognizing and describing our peers. Next week we’ll be moving on to winter gear and things we need to keep warm. Vocabulary at the bottom of this post. In Judaics we began the story of Noah and the flood and learned a song (lyrics below). Here’s the story if you want to review it...

Hello Kindergarten Families!

Hello Families, It was another busy week in General Studies Kindergarten.  We started the week with the exciting news that Liz had had her baby and immediately started making a baby quilt for her.  Each child drew a square with a picture of a grown up animal and a baby animal. With the winter weather that is predicted for the weekend, I should be able to get it put together! In Literacy we introduced D and N. Daniella and Dawn didn’t dare eat the doughnuts and Nathaniel and Naomi never need naps! In Reader’s Workshop we looked at the many...

Dear Kindergarten parents הורים יקרים, We are so excited to welcome your children back to school this week after a relaxing winter break. We spent a long time talking about what we did and where we went. We asked questions about the places we visited, including if we were somewhere warm חם or cold קר. We learned the word איפה, where, to help talk about the places we went. The Shinshinim came to visit our classroom yesterday! They helped us with our next unit, parts of the body. We practiced identifying our heads, noses, hands, and legs. Then we traced...
