November 9: Weeks 9 and 10!

Math  The 7th grade has moved steadily through the world of Real Numbers. Next stop on the math train is an Introduction to Algebra where the students will learn to take everyday situations and produce algebraic expressions and equations from the data.  Believe it or not, people use algebraic expressions and equations in their daily life without realizing they are doing so. When you are buying things at the store and figuring out how much you can spend based on how much money you have, how much change you will receive when you spend money, how much time you need to...

October 22: Weeks 7 and 8!

Humanities The past two weeks in Humanities classes have been filled with Julius Caesar, historical research writing, and lots of vocabulary! We practiced a variety of class structures while reading Julius Caesar: listening to an audiotape, reading out loud as a whole class, and reading in small groups. I loved watching students have exposure to the play in these ways. I am impressed with the progress of their social studies essays so far – the first outline, the first draft, the first big essay can be a little confusing and a little daunting. All of my students were challenged to...

October 12: First Full Week!

Math  With a new month comes a new unit and the 7th grade is moving on to Unit 2 of their math books; Real Numbers. If you’re curious, and/or don’t remember your high school math classes, imaginary numbers do exist but are not introduced until Algebra II. Until then, we’ll stick to real numbers and its subsets. These numbers make the whole world go round, whether we’re aware of them or not. No worries, it’s only natural to forget how much math is involved in our daily lives. When we cook or bake, make or spend money, travel distances, find out the temperature, or...

September 28: Getting into the School Groove!

Math  The 7th Grade has been working hard learning different techniques for finding the greatest common factor (GCF) and least common multiple (LCM) for groups of numbers. They also learned about what makes a number a perfect square or perfect cube and how to find square roots and cube roots of numbers by utilizing factorization. They will be studying hard and spending class time reviewing for their upcoming test on Friday, October 5th. Good luck, 7th grade! Humanities  In English/Language Arts, students are onto week 3 of the vocabulary journey! Please continue to look for Greek and Latin roots in...

September 14: A Great Start to the School Year!

Math  The 7th grade has been working hard since the start of the school year making discoveries about prime and composite numbers using their knowledge of factors and multiples. This week, we’re working on prime factorization and exponential notation. To celebrate Rosh Hashanah, the 7th grade has been given the following bonus question this week:   Is 5779 prime or composite? If it’s composite, find the prime factorization of 5779. For the next two weeks, we’ll learn about how to find the greatest common factor (GCF) and least common multiple (LCM) of a set of numbers and we’ll also take...

August 30: Getting Ready for 2018-2019!

Humanities  Hello! My name is Allison Corvo. I’m so excited for the upcoming school year. I have loved being back in my classroom and getting it ready for new 7th graders! In advisory, students will receive accordion folders, pencils, and other materials on the first day. I’m looking forward to discussing the summer reading book, The Outsiders, and seeing students’ reactions to the text. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at acorvo@hannahsenesh.org Judaic Studies  !ברוכים הבאים Welcome! I am looking forward to a wonderful year of learning with the 7th grade. Science  This final week in science we applied our learned engineering skills from this course to an egg drop activity. Students had to select 12 of 20 possible materials in order to drop an egg from a height without breaking. This interactive final activity allowed the class to enjoy the building process one last time. We laughed when some eggs did not survive the fall and were surprised at others that did survive after a huge thump sound. This year has been filled with successes and growth of science abilities. We cannot wait to continue hands on science next year...

Math 7X is close to finishing Unit 14: Proportions. Unit 14 assignments/corrections are due Wednesday, June 13th. 7Y is close to finishing Unit 17: Probability of Combined Events. Units 16 and 17 assignments/corrections are due Wednesday, June 13th. Judaic Studies I was blown away by the amazing presentations at the Renaissance Fair! Kol haKavod! 7th graders looked at the reaction of Bnai Yisrael to the spies’ report. Why do they say “If only we’d died in the land of Egypt or in this wilderness – if only we’d died!” Why would they rather die than go into the land? What...

Science This week in science we are finishing the building of our custom solar cars. Students have been comparing their design with other groups. They have naturally tested the function of their cars in direct sunlight and went back to improve on their design so the car can move in a straight line. Next week we will be testing these cars for maximum velocity and how straight they can travel using the power of the sun. Exciting times with our final weeks in science. Judaic Studies 7th graders are reading and translating chapter 13 of Bmidbar/the book of Numbers. Moshe...

Hebrew This week students started taking a series of assessments in all 4 skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening. A similar assessment was taken at the beginning of the year, the results we receive will allow us to track students progress in all 4 skills. These tests do not impact the students grade on their progress reports but are very important so we can track each students progress from the beginning of the year and from previous years and the MS as a whole. Math 7X worked on their unit project of making a mobile of solids this week, calculating...
