Advisory Over the past two weeks, students prepared a lesson on Estela’s Swap for kindergarteners and first graders at Brooklyn Landmark Elementary School. We will ask pre-reading, during reading, and post-reading questions. In the story, Estela has a music box that she gives to someone. The younger students will draw, color, and write about their own music box. Advisory On Friday, November 1st, students had their second trip to Brooklyn Landmark Elementary School. They read the book The Good Egg and lead students through a few comprehension activities.   Israel 7 with Phyllis and Ilana NB Israel class is getting exciting as the students received their character profiles last week!  Each student was assigned a profile that included gender, country of origin, birth date and a date of aliyah.  The dates of aliyah correspond to the waves of aliyah from European and Arab countries post-WWII and the establishment of the state of Israel.  Students started this year long project... Science Students have finished their blueprints of the “Rube Goldberg Machines”. The science room is now filled with engineers applying their skills. Everyone is problem solving and allow ideas from their  partners to be expressed in a positive and professional manner. We cannot wait to see how these machines develop over the next few weeks.   Math The 7th grade is almost finished with their second unit; Real Numbers. Advisory On Friday, October 4, 2019, students traveled to Brooklyn Landmark Elementary School as part of their year-long social action project. We read the book, The Empty Pot, and asked kids to put the events of the story in order. After that, 7th graders asked students to think of moments in the book where the main character displayed honesty, determination, and courage. Volunteers from the organization Repair the World assisted us in classrooms. The volunteers, as well as Sarah Kay and myself, were so impressed with the thoughtfulness and care put into interacting with the kindergarten and first grade students.... Read More

Judaic Studies It’s been a pleasure getting to know the 7th graders this week! We began by exploring one of our major school values: מסע/Journey. This is a key value for us this year, because will be studying the book of במדבר/Numbers, which details the journeys of Bnai Yisrael on their way to Israel. This brought up a kushiya/question for us: If God is all-powerful, why doesn’t God just magically put all of Bnai Yisrael in Israel? Why do they need to travel through the wilderness? Welcome to 7th grade, Class of 2021! Humanities  My name is Allison Corvo, and I’m so excited to begin my third year at Hannah Senesh. Math It has been a very busy and stressful few weeks for the 7th grade as they spent most of their time prepping for the ERBs. Lag Ba’Omer on Thursday was a great way to relax after the test and before getting back to learning math for the last few weeks of school. Social Action                                         Facing History with Phyllis and Ilana NB In anticipation of the seventh grade trip to the Holocaust museum in Washington DC, the students met with Phyllis, Allison, Ilana NB and Julie Arner on the Monday before the trip to prepare for the difficult experience.  Students were given the opportunity to talk about how they were feeling about seeing the disturbing images from the Holocaust and in particular the concentration camps.  We stressed the idea that everyone processes these...
