December 2, 2022 — Oh the Weather Outside’s Getting Frightful …

Math with Luis Fourth graders have been hard at work multiplying and dividing recently! Before thanksgiving, we had some fun writing, sharing, and solving our own word problems involving multiplication and division. We also had some fun thanksgiving-themed multiplication and division to really practice knowing when to divide and when to multiply. This week, we tackled factors, multiples, and prime & composite numbers, and had some very close Jeopardy games to wrap up the week.  Humanities with Hilary 4th Graders have been working SO HARD on their Publishing Party projects [IN PERSON on Wednesday, December 14 at 9am]. They are each...

November 11, 2022 — Mid-Conference Life

Humanities with Hilary Dear 4th Grade Families, Thank you so much for coming out to conferences these past two Thursdays. It was so wonderful to get to meet some of you (or re-connect with you), and to sit and talk about your fabulous fourth grader! We are finally at the end of our [realistic] fiction writing unit. Let me tell you we have some very imaginative writers in this grade. Stories about migrating ants, body switching, clones, snowball fights, dog adoption, and more! We can’t wait for you to be able to read them during the Publishing Party on Wednesday, Dec...

October 21, 2022 — The End of Fall Jewish Holidays

Hebrew with Rimma For the past two short weeks students worked hard on their oral and writing skills.  Students learned how to summarize a long story based on the vocabulary that they learned and they finished their creative posters. We continue to explore the unit about food. We just started to learn how to express opinions using complete sentences. We brainstormed  about how to write a review to the restaurant and made a list of the restaurant qualities that we liked or disliked. Our next step will be an advertising project. Humanities with Hilary Dear 4th Grade Families, What an...

October 7, 2022 — Shana Tova everyone!

Humanities with Hilary Dear 4th Grade families, We hope you are having a wonderful time celebrating the Jewish festivities this fall. There’s so much happening with Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot AND Simchat Torah! A reminder that next Thursday night is the Sukkah Sleepover for 4th Grade (a tradition that is returning to us!), and on Friday Morning the students will be leading an activity with you inside the Sukkah at 8:30am (a great time to pick up their sleepover gear 😉) We had our first official SEL (Social Emotional Learning) class this past Monday. We reviewed what “bullying behavior” can...

September 23, 2022 — Chag sameach! Have a happy and healthy New Year!!

STEAM with Sammi The biggest news of STEAM class so far is that students have received their Chromebooks! There was a lot of excitement in the air last week as we found our assigned spot in the cart, got logged in, and personalized our screens by changing our backgrounds. This moment has been much anticipated! Aside from the Chromebooks, students have been settling into the school year by practicing routines, going through Chromebook contracts (with silly memes to keep us entertained), and creating community expectations. This routine and expectation work over the first few weeks gets us set up for...

June 15, 2022 — the Last Blog Post of 4th Grade!

Judaics with Shira Last week we went on our first field trip since the pandemic started! It was so exciting to leave the building, take a subway together as a class, and to visit a new place that many students had never been to before. We visited the beautiful Green-Wood Cemetery, a national, historic landmark in the Sunset Park neighborhood. The visit started with a discussion with our Green-Wood educator about what students think and feel about visiting a historic cemetery. Students shared a range of opinions and emotions. Next, we boarded a trolley and caboose for a ride through...

May 20, 2022 — What a Time to Celebrate!

Preparing for our Performance on June 2 @ 9am Dear Families, Please make sure that your students are practicing every night for this performance. There are songs both in Hebrew AND in English. We want to make sure that the songs are memorized. As well, each student has a line that they are saying to introduce the songs. Please have them memorize that line as well. An email was sent to you with the script and lyrics. Those plus the Blues song tracks can be found on Hilary’s google classroom page. Thank you! Rimma, Heidi, Tomer and Hilary Math with Justin...

May 6th – Back from Spring Break

Math with Justin 4th Graders are continuing to study geometry after finishing their unit on angles and lines. Now they have begun to tackle types of triangles, quadrilaterals, and their different properties. The students have been playing a ‘Guess Who’ game with different quadrilaterals where they use their geometric knowledge and vocabulary to figure out which trapezoid, rectangle, square, parallelogram, rhombus, or kite is the secret shape on Desmos. You can play too! Humanities with Hilary Dear 4th Grade Families, I refuse to listen to everyone around me, who says how little time we have until the end of the year....

April 8, 2022 — Spring is Just Around the Corner

Humanities with Hilary Dear 4th Grade families, Our exploration of Westward Expansion has continued! We not only learned about the basics of the Oregon Trail (like that it started in Independence, Missouri and typically ended in the Washington/Oregon region), we also learned about what people encountered on the trail and the challenges they faced. Some encounters are landmarks, such as Chimney Rock, Fort Walla Walla, Independence Rock, Fort Laramie, and the Snake River. Students learned more about the parts of the wagon, as they created their own shoebox example. Click here to see our photo album from the day! (https://photos.app.goo.gl/BjL2EkAxrrJWgPZU6)...
