January 18 2019 — A Seat on the Bus

General Studies with Hilary: Dear Third Grade Families, What a week of change! Academically, we have been diligent investigators in Social Studies and math by learning more about the Montgomery Bus Boycott and multiplication. Social Studies and Writing In Social Studies, we concluded our study of Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott. For the past two weeks, we have focused on perspective writing. Taking all of the information learned throughout the first week of January, about the Civil Rights Movement and Rosa Parks’ standing up for her rights as a human on a bus, students were asked to walk...

January 4 — a shehecheyanu to 2019

Welcome back, everyone! What a week of change! First with the start of a new year. Then, more importantly, with the mixing of half groups. Third Graders rose to the occasion, and have smoothly transitioned into their new half groups. While we enjoyed our week from school, we definitely missed each and every one of the members in our third grade community! As community builders, each half group participated in two separate activities to strengthen our bonds — one by showing how each individual comes together to create a whole, and the other is how communication can help us to achieve...

December 14 — Science In 2018

Science with Julie For the opening weeks of 3rd grade science, students focused on creating individual scientific notebooks and doing a variety of introductory activities before delving into our first topic, Rocks and Minerals.  We discussed what it means to be a scientist, and heard firsthand from a number of different scientists about what they do from Scientists @ the Smithsonian online. Students were given science partners, and learned the steps of the Scientific Method through games and song.  They put the method into practice by conducting a few “awesome” experiments involving for instance, milk and food coloring,     We...

December 14 — Exploring the National Museum of the American Indian

General Studies with Hilary Dear 3rd grade families, How amazing were our students in the Chanukah Play? A round of applause to the students for their spectacular performance, as well as to Ilana for directing and managing the whole play! This week marked our FIRST field trip of the year! With the support of four parents, Tomer and I accompanied the class north to the Battery Park area to explore native history and some background information for our future New Amsterdam study. When first arriving at Whitehall (the term the British gave to New Amsterdam’s Director General Peter Stuyvesant’s house),...

November 28 — Learning about the Lenape and Preparing for the Publishing Party

General Studies with Hilary Dear Third Grade Families, While last week was short, the learning has not stopped! We have been researching even more about the Lenape culture, as well as life for the Algonquin Tribe (who also lived in this area). Students can’t wait to share their research with all of you at our Publishing Party on Friday, December 1 (aka this Friday!), which will begin at 9:00 am. They have been gaining knowledge about what the Lenape ate, their religion, wampum, clothing and more!           For the majority of this week, students were devoted...

November 9 — Publishing Share

Dear Third Grade Families, We have done so much work these past two weeks! In Social Studies, we started learning about the Lenni Lenape, which is the Native American tribe that lived in New York City back in 1600. We started by looking at a map of Manhattan from the 2000s, and comparing it to a map of what Eric Sanderson (a landscape ecologist) — through research — believed Mannahatta (land of many hills)  looked like in 1600.  Students noticed that the Hudson River looked wider back then. Some wondered if the water level had dropped and maybe that’s why...

October 26 — different ways we’ve thought about learning

Dear Third Grade Families, We have had three full weeks of school, so far, and we are more used to the routines of each day. As a class, we are continuing to work on making eye contact (when talking to someone), and speaking loud enough for everyone to hear you. Next month will begin with two changes — students will have new lunch spots AND students will have new desk groupings. This is very exciting! In math, we tied up our unit on mental math. This section was about discussing the strategies we use to do math in our head...

October 12 — Writer’s See, Writer’s Do

General Studies with Hilary Dear Third Grade Families, Over the past two weeks, we had a first for the school year — our first full week! I would say we did exceptionally well throughout the week, keeping up a positive attitude and eagerness to learn. Social Studies: We have learned a bit more about US Government, such as checks and balances, how bills become laws, and how these three branches of government relate not only to New York State, but also to our classroom. This week, we talked a little bit about the earth — specifically continents, oceans, and mapping....

September 28 — Sukkot Celebrations and NYS Counties

General Studies with Hilary Dear Third Grade families, We hope you have had a sweet beginning to 5779! Last Thursday, some third graders had the opportunity to work with Anne and half of the seventh graders in the garden. Together, they helped move the nutrient-rich dirt (aka compost) onto the flower and vegetable garden, helping to keep it healthy.                   Throughout the week of September 24, students were also able to eat their lunch under the sukkah (weather abiding)! What a special opportunity! On Wednesday, September 26, students interacted with their individual...
