Celeberating Chanukkah  Second graders lit Chanukkah candles every day last week. On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday we lit with the whole school in the gym. Our chazanim, Ben and Rephael, were so excited to represent our class in lighting with their buddies for the whole school on Wednesday. On Thursday we lit with our buddies in our classroom. After lighting candles with our buddies, we watched a video of our sixth grade buddies from when they were in second grade and were in the Chanukkah play. We then, we split into smaller groups to play dreidel. It was so nice...

Thanksgiving, Publishing Party, and Israel

Celebrating Chanukkah! Second graders have been preparing for Chanukkah by reading the channukkah story in English and Hebrew, practicing reciting the blessings, and learning our Hebrew lines and dance for the chanukkah play. Students received an early chanukkah present of a dreidel from the PA today at dismissal so that they can play at home on the first night of Chanukkah on Sunday! Chanukkah Play: Monday, December 10th at 5:15. If you want a sneak peak of your child’s dance, play them this song and ask them to show it to you!     Publishing Party Thank you for attending...

Voting and Spotlight on Science

Science The students have been very active scientists the past weeks.  They continue to build science vocabulary and understanding of concepts related to the three states of matter: solids, liquids, and gases.  Each pair of science partners conducted an experiment with hot and cold water in a closed environment with cups to learn about condensation.  We read the article “A Snowman in July” which exemplified how water can change from solid to liquid to gas to water again, and students identified science words in the text relating to these changes. The next science experiment on mixing and separating solids was...

Building Community and Tohu Va’vohu

Community Building With full weeks of school underway, we opened our classroom community up to visitors who had stories to read and information to share. Regina, the class’s kindergarten teacher, joined second grade to read them books that she remembered they loved when they were in kindergarten. She talked about how it is different now that she is a teacher for younger children, and shared memories of the students as kindergartners. Following this, Leo’s grandparents came in to read a book about the creation of the thesaurus. Second graders had prepared questions for Leo’s grandparents about their life in South Africa...

First Full Week!

Working Hard in Second Grade We started the first  full week of second grade with a puppet show with Karen. The second graders were so excited to see the puppets and to learn that they too have “started second grade this year”. Through a story from the puppets, the students explored the idea of what to do when something is challenging. Why should we not just give up, and how can we push ourselves to keep going. Students had the chance to share about something that they find challenging, and to think about how they learned to do it anyway. This...

Sukkot Trip, Social Learning

Writing In Writing Workshop we studied authors who have written meaningful small moment stories. We read the story Owl Moon by Jane Yolen, and noticed how she described this one night of owling and stretched it over so many pages! We got to writing our small moment narratives, using ideas from our decorated writing folders, and studying Jane Yolen’s writing to help us stretch our stories. With our writing buddies we talked about our ideas, brainstormed ways authors decide on their small moments, and shared our writing. We can’t wait to read The Leaving Morning by Angela Johnson next week...

Community Building

Community Building The first two weeks of school we began building our classroom community through playing games to learn about each other, practicing new routines, and discussions about how to make our classroom a place where everyone can learn their best. We played “our favorites” game, where we learned each other’s favorite ice cream flavor, hobbies, and more. We played a team building game where in small groups students had an elastic with pieces of strings attached. The objective of the game was to stack cups using on the strings and elastic- no hands on the cups allowed! Following this...

Field Trip

Writing Field Trip We began the week with a writing-based field trip to 826NYC, also known as the Superhero Supply Company in Brooklyn. At the Supply Co. we were lead back into the secret writing lab (which we entered through a bookcase that turned into a secret door!) and began to brainstorm characters and a setting for our story. Then, we decided what makes for a good problem in a story, which second graders described as “one that is exciting and hard to solve”. Then, with the help of the amazing Superhero Supply Co. team, we wrote the beginning and...
