6th Grade News: The “Happy Summer” Edition

HUMANITIES

The last week of school was filled fun and creative learning opportunities in Humanities. We put on Greek mythology skits for our second grade buddies, held our final “Wacky Word Olympics” with all of our vocabulary words, analyzed our favorite song lyrics, and shared current events articles of our choice. Most memorably, of course, we presented our 6th Grade Greek Symposium. The students were so proud to share all of their hard work with you. Thank you for being an enthusiastic and inquisitive audience as they showed off their research and artifacts. Here is a slideshow from the event, made by Annette, our Director of Communications. https://vimeo.com/274698677. Enjoy more photos posted below.

On a personal note, I am overwhelmed with gratitude toward the entire 6th grade. I told the kids that I appreciated coming into teach them each day; their inquisitiveness, creative spirits, and kindness toward each other were a joy to witness. I’m so sad I won’t be teaching them next year, but I told all of them that must visit me and say hi in the halls!

Have a wonderful summer,

Naomi

HEBREW

Dear parents,

Hard to believe, but this is the last blog of the year!!!

This has been a productive and fun year for the children. I have watched them gain not only knowledge but advanced skills and self-confidence.

I am happy to re-share with you the links to the two groups end of the year presentations.

I wish you all a safe and relaxing summer and look forward to seeing you and your children in September!

SCIENCE

Students this week finished their sixth grade science with a closing activity in order to reflect and enjoy all the successes we had in science this year. Students enjoyed the chance to make their own ice cream. Using a large bag of ice and salt and a smaller bag with cream, sugar, and vanilla. They shook and shook until the magic of science provided fresh ice cream. We have enjoyed every moment of science and cannot wait to continue the adventure next year.

JUDAICS

I can’t believe the end of these two years studying with your wonderful students has come to an end! I have learned so much from their deep reflections and unique ideas. This week we wrapped up watching “Exodus Kings and Gods” and wrote a review on Amazon about the movie. The students wrote reviews that really showed their ability to kindly point out things that they appreciated about the movie as well as criticize with reasons based off of how far the movie was from the Torah text. It was so fun to see how upset they were when the movie went far from the text truth! We also had a closing talk about “free will” I highly recommend you look with them on google classroom and see their ideas and discuss this very interesting topic with them. On Thursday our last class book ended our first class together two years ago. We began our time together in 5th grade studying the blessing for studying Torah that says we are blessed to “busy” ourselves in Torah. On our last study day together we translated a Rashi on the tenth plague that explains that we actually painted the blood on the inside of the door posts. The reason for this is that it was not for others to see, rather it was a personal decision. Rashi says it was just for G-d to see us “busying” ourselves with Mitzvot. We discussed the importance of not just studying Torah for a grade or to show off our skills, but to really learn for the sake of bringing it into our active value filled life in whatever way it personally feels right. Have a wonderful summer! –Laura
