6th Grade News: 9/5-9/8/17

HUMANITIES
It was so wonderful to meet all the 6th graders this week during advisory time and humanities classes. In advisory with me and Mike Noll (Science), students had fun practicing non-verbal communication skills. They learned to work as a team and communicate creatively as they completed tasks without using their voices.
In Literature class, students learned about the literary term “theme” and analyzed the theme of friendship in their summer reading book, Bridge to Terabithia. They answered the question: “What does friendship mean in Bridge to Terabithia?” and found evidence from the text to support their answers.
Lastly, in History class, students shared items that are important to their family history. We used this activity as a springboard to discussing the importance of studying history in general. Students considered: Why is it important to learn about our personal past? Our family’s past? World history? It was fascinating to learn about students’ backgrounds through their important objects; they brought in photos of great-grandparents, meaningful art pieces, kippot from their brises, and more. Next week, we’ll continue learning about why and how we study history before launching into our exploration of ancient civilizations.

Have a great weekend,
Naomi

JUDAICS
It was so exciting to welcome everyone back to school this week! The students got right back into the swing of things and we already started translating and discussing text. We studied Mishnah Brachot 4:2, which is about a Rabbi who said a prayer when entering his place of study and when exiting it. We looked at his prayer and discussed his intentions and how his prayers could impact his actions. We then wrote our own prayers for entering and exiting class. They are written on the folders that they will have all year. I am looking forward to beginning our High Holiday unit next week.
Shabbat Shalom,
Laura
MATH
It’s been really exciting to have everyone back at school, getting ready for classes, and being back on schedule. It has been fun to see everyone from the summer and how much they have grown. We have started the school year by working on our number sense and playing with our numbers to get back into being at school and thinking about math. The students have done a great job already working together in class. Next week we will start the 6th grade curriculum and jump right into learning what a variable is and why we use them. I am looking forward to teaching the students this year. Hope everyone enjoys the weekend!

HEBREW

Dear parents,

This week I was so happy to meet your children! They are a wonderful group of kids, eager and excited to learn. We started the year by discussing the benefits of learning a second language and the requirements in order to get the most out of the Hebrew course. Next, we started a review unit that discusses the transition from summer vacation to school.

I wish everyone a relaxing weekend,

Andreea
