HUMANITIES

It’s hard to believe that this was the second to last week of school! We remain busy in humanities as the end of the year approaches. This week was filled with collaborative and experiential learning opportunities. In Literature, we culminated our unit on The Graveyard Book with creative projects. Students made comic strips, skits, videos, and stories inspired by the novel’s themes and characters. They had fun sharing these with classmates, and it was great to see how students took their projects in so many creative directions.

The highlight of the week was our very own, Hannah Senesh-style simulation of the ancient Greek Olympics. Students represented four different ancient Greek “city-states” as they competed: Argos, Corinth, Thebes, and Miletus. To prepare for the big event, students made original cheers and signs — incorporating research-based facts about their city-states in each. During the games, we competed in ancient Greek sports that are still around today, like relay racing, long jump, and discus throw. Finally, the winners were crowned with olive wreaths, following in the true tradition of the ancient games. The students had a blast cheering each other on and showing their loyalty to their city-states. Enjoy the photos below:

Have a wonderful weekend,

SCIENCE

Students this week had two science activities from their suggestions. This allowed students to have  enjoyable and exciting science classes in order to end our science year strong. This week they worked with the marble run and building with legos. They also had the chance to start making crystals by creating a solution that would grow crystals over the weekend. Next week we will finish science with two more student suggested activities.

HEBREW

Dear Parents,

This week both groups worked hard at practicing for end of the year performances. HaKbutza Aleph will be presenting their play, A Flat For Rent by Leah Goldberg on Tuesday, right after the Greek Symposium. HaKbatza Bet will record their play next week and will share it with you. If you have a few minutes it can be great if the children rehearse their parts with you and show you their costumes.

I wish everyone an amazing weekend,

Andreea

Judaics:

This week we had a very intense debate about “Free Will”. We looked at psukim in Shemot where it seems that Moshe and Pharaoh do not have free will. We reflected on why this would be a model of G-d relationship with people in the Torah. Should this show us that this is how it is? Or is this showing us that this is how G-d pre-nation in the Land of Israel was? Or is this only for special situations? Or did Moshe and Pharaoh have free will and it just wasn’t used? All of these questions and more flew around the room in heated debate as we picked about the psukim and tried to figure out what was going on. We then brought it a bit more personal and thought about our own free will. Students shared very different opinions and feelings on the topic. Students shared respectfully and reflected why they agreed or disagree with their peers. Some students even shared that their opinion changed after hearing something that clicked for them on the other side. It was truly a beautiful discussion that show cased how far they have come in their conversation and listening skills and how much they have embodied the value of Elu v’Elu (openness). I suggest having this discussion with your child at home, I guarantee they have a lot to say on the topic!

Shabbat Shalom
