HUMANITIES

This week in History class, students embarked on an imaginary “field trip” back in time to visit the Minoan civilization of ancient Greece. We examined the frescoes (paintings on plaster) that they left behind, drawing inferences about their culture and values. We also watched a video that showed the fascinating ruins of their palace in Knossos, on the island of Crete, and took notes on the Minoans’ lifestyle, religion, and relationship with surrounding people.

In Literature, students discussed the endings of their “Coming of Age” novels, Goodbye Stranger and The Wednesday Wars. To culminate our unit, students are completing a podcast project related to our theme of Coming of Age. First, we listened to clips from the WNYC radio series “Being 12,” which shares a variety of New Yorkers’ opinions on the “Tweenage” experience. (Listen to clips from this series here.) These audio stories led to discussions about both the difficult and fun parts of being 11 and 12 years old. Now, students have begun creating their own podcasts — featuring either their personal, real-life experiences or the experiences of preteen characters in their Coming of Age books. I’m looking forward to hearing the students’ original audio stories.

Have a great weekend and enjoy the spring weather,

Naomi

SCIENCE

Students this week continued with the building process of their informational disease games. Their ideas are taking shape with each class. The students have been working successfully with their partners in order to be focused during the building process. The classroom is filled with laughter and support for each other as they develop these games. Next week we will continue with the building of these informational disease games.

JUDAICS

“This week in Judaics we learned about the Holocaust. We learned about what Germany was going through before the Holocaust and we learn some key words to help us through our study. Then a survivor of the Holocaust came in to speak to the middle school. We all gathered and listen to her story. It was a full week in JS.

Shabbat shalom!”
