5th Grade Week of 9/10

So glad to be back! We have enjoyed the new school year so much with our new 5th graders, and look forward to a wonderful year ahead. Please enjoy our classroom updates below, and have a good weekend!

Humanities: What a start to the year! We have dived right in to our Humanities units, including reading Wonder, studying story structure, writing personal narratives, and learning important academic skills like identifying cause and effect. We will continue to build fundamental skills over the next few weeks in each of the major Humanities subjects, while exploring the essential theme of Identity. Have a great weekend!-Tony

Math: Fifth graders are dealing with whole numbers up to seven (and soon to be eight) figures. This week, we’ve been comparing numbers, utilizing the symbols indicating greater than (>) and less than (<). The trick? The less than symbol looks like an upper case “L” at an angle! Students are also recognizing patterns of increasing and decreasing, and are using estimation and rounding to gain a better understanding of the value of specific numbers. Students are reminded to bring their math journals, accordion folders, planners, and a sharpened pencil to math class each time. They also know that they can come and see me before the classes, as I am here early each day.-Fred

Hebrew: Hi everyone! It’s been great getting to know the 5th grade and was so nice to see them after the Holiday. This week we started a unit on “Food and Family”. Student’s shared their favorite holiday foods with the class and we started to learn about the origins of foods by country. In the next couple of weeks we will explore more on these topics and start listening comprehension activities.
Wishing you all a Shabbat Shalom-Yehuda

Judaics:  (Written by classroom bloggers)

“The first week of school we learned about Teshuva and its connection to forgiveness. We explored the steps of Teshuva. We acted each one out! I really enjoyed the acting and we got to use random funny props. We talked about what the steps meant and we debating which one was hardest. We learned the story of Jonah. We learned how hard it can be to do teshuva. Dont be afraid to ask for forgiveness. I really enjoyed acting out the teshuva steps!” Tamara

“The second week of school we continued learning about the s T’s “Teshuva, Tefillah and Tzedakah”. We talked about how they help us start of the year fresh and on the right foot. We continued learning about Jonah and the Whale. Jonah goes through the steps that we learned about from Rambam. We learned about G-d forgiving the people and how Jonah and G-d both practice forgiveness. I enjoyed watching a music video about the story of Jonah” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qKQkQlxR-8
