5th Grade Week of 4/15

Chag Sameach! Please enjoy our 5th grade class updates below, and have a wonderful Pesach!

Humanities

In Humanities these past couple of weeks, we have been studying our new class text, Revolution is not a Dinner Party, by Ying Chang Compestine. The students are enthralled with this young adult historical fiction book about post-revolution Communist China. Our main focus in the unit is on personal and historical connections, as our students continue to study the theme of identity in its many forms. In Social Studies, our students finished researching for the China Museum. They did a tremendous job, and will begin their essay rough drafts after break. Have a wonderful break!-Tony

Judaics

Please check your email for two important emails from me! “Passover Family Learning Sheet” and “Laura in Israel and Yom Hashoah”. Your children have had a wonderful time preparing for Passover this year at such a high and meaningful level. We had discussions around the 4 Children that really demonstrated their empathy for different types of learners and strengths in varying subjects. They reflected on which settings they feel like the wise, simple, bad and one who doesn’t know how to ask. They also did a deep text analysis of the difference between the answers in the Torah and the Haggadah. I hope you all enjoy the 4 children game they brought home that was based on their learning! They all know the Kiddush for the seder as well as many songs. I hope you all have a joyous and meaningful Passover. Check out new pictures! https://photos.app.goo.gl/TxJ8pei9sRfYkfG76

Math
The past two weeks we have been reintroduced and mastered writing and interpreting decimals through the thousandth place. We converted the decimals to fractions and rounded when necessary. After the break, we will continue working with decimals using multiplication and division. This use of decimals will allow us many real world situations as we compare prices of items and begin to see what it looks like to add on tax to total amounts.-Katie
Science
Science has started our exploration of space. Students are filled with excitement and curiosity around this topic. We introduced the unit by sorting space cards in terms of how far, how big, and how old. There was health debate and focus on the concept of perspective. We later explore space pictures, allowing students the chance to ask all of their curious questions. They then selected their own space object and were allowed to present this object in method of their choosing. When we return from break we will continue this exploration of space and conduct a wonderful field trip to the Hayden Planetarium.-Mike and Sammi
Advisory
Last week, students participated in Perseverance Week, an event designed to give them the tools and encouragement to persevere through the challenges they will face in middle school. The students embraced the challenge head-on, and were rewarded for all their hard work with a special ice cream party yesterday. Congratulations, 5th Graders!
