5th Grade Week of 12/17 and 1/2

Welcome back! We hope everyone had a restful and fun break! We are happy to continue sharing updates with you from our classrooms. This week’s updates will include notes from the week before break as well. Have a good weekend!

HUMANITIES

Before break, our students did a tremendous job on their Celebration of Civilizations event! We are so proud of their hard work and dedication during this project. In addition, we continued our study of Homeless Bird, focusing particularly on theme and quote analysis. In Social Studies, we began our Ancient India unit. Shabbat Shalom!-Tony

JUDAICS

Students are now focusing on what it means to be an “up stander”. We read about Reuben standing up in a wise way to his brothers when they wanted to do something bad to Joseph. Students thought about times they had acted in a bad way and what had motivated them to do so. We acted out scenarios where someone stood up for the right thing while understanding the motivation of the people who wanted to act badly. It has been really wonderful to hear how students are using the situation with Joseph and his brothers to navigate their own personal social scenarios that they encounter. We discussed and journaled about “why people do bad things”. It was so nice to hear how reflective students were about how anger and jealousy can get you to act in ways that you are not proud of. Next week we will continue in our Chumash text and begin to prepare for a vocabulary and grammar assessment.
Shabbat Shalom,
Laura

MATH

We are so excited to introduce our new 5-6 math teacher, Katie! Our students are already learning so much from her, and have done a tremendous job welcoming her to our community. We look forward to a wonderful rest of the year with her!

It was great seeing your kids after the break! in the few days we had since returning we have preparing the kids for a unit on the theme of “Biographies”. This unit will allows students to get a better understanding of past tense. Our goal is that by the end of the unit, students will be able to write short narratives using past tense.
5 Reg:
It was great seeing your kids after the break! Since returning we continued a grammatical review of infinitives and present tense. In addition, we used the time to talk and strengthen verbal skills by discussing vacation and using some verbs in past tense.-Anat
להורים שלום,
תודה רבה לכולכם על התמיכה וההבנה שסייעה לי לעבור תקופה קשה, כרטיסי הברכה שהתלמידים הכינו לי חיממו את ליבי.
השבוע הוא קצר ואנחנו נעשה חזרה על החומר שהתלמידים למדו על מנת להעניק להם את הכלים להמשיך בפרוייקט שחלקם החלו.
שבת שלום,
אילנה
