5th Grade Week of 11/5

Humanities: This week in Humanities, we continued our study of Wonder, exploring the themes of personal identity and text-to-self connections. We tied in our Opinion Writing unit with reading Wonder as well. In Social Studies, we began to wrap up our Early Civilizations and Early Humans unit by study the Ancient Sumerians.-Tony

Math: Following multiplication of whole numbers, we moved onto its opposite operation: division. Similar to division, students learned that there are a number of strategies we can use to save time and steps. For example, instead of moving the number of zeroes of each factor to the product when we multiply, we saw that we could also cancel the same number of zeroes from both the dividend and the divisor, and then divide to find the quotient.

We then went on to the new concept of order of operations that need to be followed in order to solve a problem with more than one operation. With all that, we began to apply these concepts when working on word problems. Students learned that each sentence in a problem contains information and/or instructions about how to proceed. This includes the number of steps taken (and in which order), the operations that apply, and what they are actually looking for. We also saw the importance of labeling each step.
Finally, students had the opportunity to be the teacher. Basically, they were given a problem and then pretend they were teaching it to a four-year-old. Some students partnered up or worked alone, and did a stellar job. Their work was culminated in posters that are on display on the bulletin board outside the math room. I look forward to sharing these with you during conferences.-Fred
The past couple of weeks we have been focusing on family trees. Students have been learning the titles of different family members in relation to them and started to create their own family trees on a website called family echo.-Yehuda
