Humanities
What a successful couple weeks in Humanities! We finished reading Homeless Bird, and have begun our essays on theme in the text. In Social Studies, we are studying Hinduism, and we are working on a Council of the Gods project in which students are taking on the persona of a Hindu deity and making speeches convincing their classmates that they should be Ruler of the Universe. Have a lovely long weekend!-Tony
Judaics
Please click on this link to see new photo’s from your students adventures this week!
I am not sure if you are aware that your students entered a time travel machine in Judaics this past week. They landed in 1881 Russia and received new names, family members, jobs and struggles. They experienced the news of being accused of killing Czar Alexander II, they mourned over the new harsh May Laws that were put in place for Jews, the excitedly discussed the Auto Emancipation Pamphlet sent by mail to them by Leon Pinsker, they experienced horrible pogroms and had to support each other when disaster stuck their neighbors, they learned Hebrew and agriculture skills from a visitor who came from Palestine with Hovevei Zion as they planned their eventual Aliyah. After many town meetings we decided to join the first Aliyah to Palestine. We had to fill out a visa form to get our Pikda Aduma and have permission from the Ottoman Empire to enter. We prayed on a boat as we approached the shores of Jaffa. Once we landed families experienced both success and struggle. Some got married, some became ill with malaria, some decided to move to America and everyone learned to make wine in Rishon Lezion and thanked Baron Rothschild for his generous funding. Through out the simulation I was so impressed by the students first person reflections in their diary entries. They really cared for the community and felt how worth the struggles were because they had their eye on a strong future for the Jewish people.
We now are studying text from the Torah and Gemara focused on our responsibility to not waste and help the future. Students will be using our school value of Areivut (responsibility) to celebrate Tu Bshvat this year.
Shabbat Shalom,

Math
Hi Parents,
It’s been a great couple of weeks since I have started at Hannah Senesh. Everyone has been so kind and welcoming, and I am really enjoying getting to know all the students. We are nearing the end of the chapter and I wanted to share the calendar with you, so you are aware of any important dates (specifically, the Chapter Test and Fractions Menu Board Project due date).
Please notice that tomorrow we will be working on projects, make sure your child has any supplies they will need to make the most of this class period.
If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out.
Best,
Katie

SCIENCE
These last two weeks we have conducted a building project focusing on the concept of buoyancy. Students built their own custom boats using foil. They measured their boat’s volume and mass before adding pennies to the boat. Once the boat sunk with the weight of the pennies they calculated the final density of their boat. The following time in science the were allowed to use an additional item and redesign their boat. Everyone was excited when noticing improvements in their design.-Mike Noll and Samantha Butwin
