Judaics with Shira Students have started learning how to chant from the torah. In class we are learning the names of notes and how they look. We saw that some tfilot (prayers) that we know already have the torah tune, helping us to be familiar with it. Individual students have also had the chance to start reading from the torah in our whole group tfillah sevrice. 3rd Grade: 1/28

Reading: We are continuing to read Because of Winn-DIxie and learning all about the main character, Opal. We thought that she had a big heart for animals because she rescued Winn-Dixie, but we realized that it extended to people too when she asked Miss Franny to be her friend. We dug deeper into her personality to theorize why Opal is like this. We thought it might be because she’s lonely after moving to a new town and not having any friends. Dear Kindergarten Families,   This week, we planted parsley seeds, began a new Creation painting, and learned a new way to read and write the date: 1/28/22, in addition to January 28, 2022.  This is in preparation for a few special activities we will do on 2/22/22. January 28: New Year, New Learning

Humanities:  To start the new semester, we have moved from Mesopotamia to Ancient Egypt. The students created a map of Ancient Egypt, explored the importance of the Nile, and are now making authentic recreations of boats invented by the Egyptians. We also explored a modern day issue on the Nile; the building of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. The dam has the potential to provide electricity to 70 millions Ethiopians but could also restrict the flow of water to Sudan and Egypt who rely on the Nile for 90% of their drinking water. Ask your student to explain the conflict...

We had a party in class to celebrate our accomplishments – finishing learning the Hebrew alef-bet and our nitzanim workbooks. I encourage you to look through your child’s workbook to see the amazing work that he/she has done! In Tefilah, we learned a new prayer from the Amidah...

2nd grade 1/28/22

The past two weeks have been busy! We launched a new unit in Writer’s Workshop on Informational writing. The students started by listing topics they know a lot about such as gymnastics, cats, baseball, soccer, pets etc. Then the students chose one topic from their list and created separate chapters and headings for it. Our next steps include adding details where they can teach and share their expertise with an audience. Stay tuned… During word work, the students learned about what contractions are, how to read them and how to use them in writing. Be sure to ask your child...
