HUMANITIES 7th grade has started our unit entitle Holocaust and Human Behavior. So far, students have engaged with the topics of identity, stereotypes, the consequences of groups, and antisemitism as we build a foundation for understanding the Holocaust. Students have also started reading the graphic biography of Anne Frank, whose diary we will start reading after the break. The students have done an excellent job grappling with difficult ideas, concepts, and facts. 6th Grade News: 2/12/21
Humanities: These past few weeks in 6th grade humanities have been busy with reading, researching, and writing. In ELA, we are in the midst of wrapping up our unit on Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. I’m so impressed with students’ insightful and mature reactions as the book nears its difficult and violent end. Throughout the unit, students have learned about the overt racism and discrimination that marked the Jim Crow era in the United States, and in the lessons following February break, we will continue learning about how that history impacts attitudes and systems today. February and Adar in 8th Grade!
Tomorrow, for Rosh Hodesh Adar, students are excited to come to school in their pjs. In Humanities class, we are planning to have a relaxing pj reading party! There will be Netflix fireplace playing on the screen, cozy chairs, and some nice books to read independently. In ELA, students are ending their unit on poetry, in which they are writing journal responses about a poem of their choice.
