Kindergarten newsletter

Dear Kindergarten Parents הורים יקרים, It was great to have you all in our Sukkah for breakfast yesterday. This week was a very busy week in our classroom, as we learn about Sukkot. The students made a long paper chain to decorate our Sukkah that we built in class. Each student made their own lulav, etrog, hadas, and arava. In addition, they learned the bracha for the lulav. Today, the kids met with the eighth graders in the Sukkah, and together, they built a candy Sukkah. They learned the song “Patish Masmer” and “Sukati HaSukkah.” Hebrew Vocabulary: Patish...

Our Week in 5th Grade! 10-18-19

Although the weeks are short, we have been packing in a ton of learning! Read on to find out what your student’s are doing in each of their classes. Advisory:  The advisory classes began watching a Netflix series called The Kindness Diaries. The series follows a man who travels around the world relying entirely on the kindness of strangers for his meals, shelter and any other needs. We have had really wonderful conversations about how each of us can put a little kindness out into the world. Keeping with our kindness theme, the students filled out a Kindness Survey and reflected...

6th Grade News: 10/2 – 10/18/19

ADVISORY:  6th graders had a great time these past few weeks getting to know their 2nd grade buddies. We participated in ice breakers, drawn together, celebrated kaballat Shabbat together, and spent time together in the Sukkah. The 6th and 2nd grade pairs will continue to strengthen their bonds throughout this year, and they’ll continue the buddy relationship next year as well! Enjoy the photos from one of our buddy activities below.     Best, Mike and Naomi, 6th grade advisors HUMANITIES:  The past few weeks in humanities have been full of ancient Greek history and mythology. As we launched into...

Advisory On Friday, October 4, 2019, students traveled to Brooklyn Landmark Elementary School as part of their year-long social action project. We read the book, The Empty Pot, and asked kids to put the events of the story in order. After that, 7th graders asked students to think of moments in the book where the main character displayed honesty, determination, and courage. Volunteers from the organization Repair the World assisted us in classrooms. The volunteers, as well as Sarah Kay and myself, were so impressed with the thoughtfulness and care put into interacting with the kindergarten and first grade students....

4th Grade News: October 18

Last Friday we celebrated twenty five years of the Hannah Senesh Community Day School. A highlight of the day was fourth graders having the opportunity to interview Jonathan and Rebecca Katz. I have to say I was really proud of the students, both in terms of the questions they developed and their engagement during the interviews. Jonathan was one of the founding parents and his daughter Rebecca was in the first graduating class in 2002. Students had prepared questions ahead of time, and each child had the opportunity to ask one of them. We learned of Jonathan’s vision of a...

October 18th – Chag Sukkot Sameach !

JS with Ariana It’s been a lot of fun in third grade. After learning about Rosh HaShana, we went together to perform Tashlich. It was beautiful and meaningful to see all students engaged in this important mitzvah to seek a new beginning and work towards self improvement. This past weeks we have been learning all about Sukkot. We learned the blessings we recite when dwelling the Sukkah as well as the blessing we recite when we shake the Lulav. We spent time learning about the 4 ha minim, the four species, their significance as well as the fact that one...
