6th Grade News: 6/4 – 6/8/18

HUMANITIES It’s hard to believe that this was the second to last week of school! We remain busy in humanities as the end of the year approaches. This week was filled with collaborative and experiential learning opportunities. In Literature, we culminated our unit on The Graveyard Book with creative projects. Students made comic strips, skits, videos, and stories inspired by the novel’s themes and characters. They had fun sharing these with classmates, and it was great to see how students took their projects in so many creative directions. The highlight of the week was our very own, Hannah Senesh-style simulation...

First Grade News: Week of June 4th

In Math, we finished our introduction into multiplication and division. First graders showed off their knowledge of multiplication by making skyscraper arrays! We then began to learn about money. This week we learned the value of coins, and practiced counting money. We played two new math games: race to one dollar, and money compare.   In Social Studies we learned about different ways to reduce our energy consumption. We reread a favorite book from Kindergarten, “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind.” It’s the true story of a boy who lived in Malawi and taught himself to build a windmill. In...

Biography Share – June 8

Dear Third Grade Families, Over the past several weeks, our third graders have been working SO hard on their biography writing. Last Friday, they finally got to share their writing and show off everything they learned with our seventh grade buddies! Students (some in fabulous costumes!) sat around our desk groups, and got ready be interviewed. Seventh grade buddies came prepared with all kinds of questions for third graders. They wanted to know facts the third graders had learned about their biography subjects, but also wanted to know about the writing strategies third graders used for their essays. The seventh...

Field Trip

Writing Field Trip We began the week with a writing-based field trip to 826NYC, also known as the Superhero Supply Company in Brooklyn. At the Supply Co. we were lead back into the secret writing lab (which we entered through a bookcase that turned into a secret door!) and began to brainstorm characters and a setting for our story. Then, we decided what makes for a good problem in a story, which second graders described as “one that is exciting and hard to solve”. Then, with the help of the amazing Superhero Supply Co. team, we wrote the beginning and...
