Advisory For the past two weeks, 7th grade girls and boys have had separate advisories. With Yehuda, the 7th grade girls read and discussed an interesting op-ed from the New York Times https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/31/opinion/im-10-and-i-want-girls-to-raise-their-hands.html  With Allison and Jessica, the boys looked at a different article from the Times https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/04/opinion/sunday/kids-would-you-please-start-fighting.html which they really disagreed with. We will bring the whole group back together after Thanksgiving so students can share their thoughts and suggestions for how to improve our classroom conversations. Judaic Studies This week, students worked on projects to mark the completion of our first Bmidbar unit. The 7th graders made power point presentations, choosing...

6th Grade News 11/20-11/22/17

HUMANITIES This week in History class, students had the chance to write like Mesopotamian scribes. They flattened clay into small tablets, used wedge-shaped writing tools that resembled reed styluses, and carved sentences using the ancient writing system called Cuneiform. Some chose to paint their tablets in bright colors, too. After this writing exercise, students were better able to imagine the life and work of scribes, who played a valuable role in Mesopotamian society. Here are some photos of the students at work:    In Literature class, we reached the end of our novel The Giver. The occasion sparked strong feelings...

Social Action Trip and Thanksgiving

This week we were busy preparing for Thanksgiving! We read books about the history of Thanksgiving as well as a silly one about the lengths a turkey goes to in order to escape Thanksgiving dinner, called “Turkey Trouble” by Wendy Silvano. We prepared for our very first baking experiment of cornbread by discussing kitchen safety, hygiene, and expectations. Then, we had the opportunity to experience preparing for a Thanksgiving feast by cooking in the Hannah Senesh kitchen! Each student took a turn measuring, pouring and mixing our delicious cornbread. We worked together as a community to make something delicious! As...

In Hebrew, we learned the letter samech as well as a new vowel, which makes the “eh” sound. In Yahadut, we learned a new prayer from the amidah called harotze betshuva. We spoke about what or who reminds us to make good choices in our lives. This week’s Parasha is Vayetze, which is about Jacob...
