Students as learners
When spending time in classrooms observing children in their learning environment it is evident that each student is unique in their strengths, challenges and learning styles. While one child may shine giving an oral presentation, another student may share their knowledge through the creation of a diorama and another student may present their understanding in the form of an essay. Each of these students has processed information in a meaningful way and chosen a different path to convey their understanding of content. |

Teachers today are responding to an increasingly broad spectrum of students’ needs and learning styles. Children vary widely in their neurodevelopmental strengths and challenges, and this variation has powerful implications for educating all our children. Today we have a lot of information about multiple intelligences and learning styles and, as educators, we are bringing this knowledge into our classroom learning environments. Together the Senesh staff is learning the many ways that teachers can integrate multiple intelligences and our understanding of different learning styles into our curriculum to help our students learn and achieve in school. |

At the Hannah Senesh School our staff responds to a broad spectrum of students needs. Our teachers see that assessment and instruction are inseparable. Flexibility is essential as we work towards our goal of meeting each student’s individual needs. Teachers adjust content, process, and product in response to student’s readiness and learning profile. Classrooms with expectations that are too difficult cause frustration and situations that are too easy can cause boredom. In an effort to create an optimal balance our teachers have built multiple avenues to content. |
| In our classrooms we find flexible grouping, tiered activities, individual, small group, and whole group instruction, as well as ongoing assessment. Our students create physical models when they study community, build pyramids when studying ancient Mayans and debate the issue of slavery as though they are a Southern Court of law.
The thoughtful planning and understanding of our students which our teachers consistently pursue is our tried and true system for helping all of our unique and special young learners feel successful as they journey through school.
